Helping Way Fund was established in 2003 with the goal of being a “last resort” fund for emergency needs for Spinal Cord Injury Alberta's (SCI-AB) clients, who cannot afford to buy assisted and adapted equipment needed for their everyday lives. The fund has been supported throughout the years by a generous donor, who was a quadriplegic, and saw the gap in government funding, specifically the Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) program. Guy Coulombe, who has been with SCI-AB for the last 35 years and held numerous positions, has been the coordinator of the fund since the beginning, and as a quadriplegic himself, witnessed firsthand the lack of available funding for people with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities.
Helping Way Fund is an emergency fund that helps to offset incurring costs for equipment, or other health care needs not covered by any other source. Since its inception twenty years ago, the fund has assisted more than 550 clients in paying for eligible equipment and health expenses for a total of $243,000! Most of the people assisted by the Helping Way Fund are on a limited income, and the things they need may not be totally covered. Guy explains that AADL uses “benchmark pricing," meaning they will only pay a certain amount towards the purchase of a piece of equipment. This leaves many people paying out of their pockets for the rest, what is called - an “upgrade cost”. Guy adds that there are many items that are not even on the AADL program. These items are needed for everyday independence and may be covered by the Helping Way Fund. While the government reviews the program every year, the need is just too high. Due to the support of the generous donor and some direct donations, Helping Way Fund eligibility was broadened, and the lifetime maximum was increased from $500 to $1000. But now, approaching its 20-year anniversary the fund is at risk of being scrapped due to lack of funds and donations. It is estimated that by the end of 2023 the fund will seize to exist, resulting in numerous people losing the only available source of complimentary funding for assisted equipment. The difference between dependability and independence for many of SCI-AB's clients is in one piece of equipment. One piece of equipment that improves their way of life, daily routine, and self reliance. If you or your family members, or someone you know have received this type of support, you would know what difference this fund has made for your loved ones. To stay operational for yet another year the fund needs $25,000, and thus we appeal to our community for help.
